Introduction
This blog relating to Digital Citizenship is written by someone who has, for the most part, refrained from embracing social media and much of what cell phones and online communities have to offer. I have created accounts for a few sites including most recently twitter as part of the current course I am taking at university, but the discomfort that I feel is intense. Trying to sift through the overwhelming volume of content that is available can be daunting, yet I certainly see the incredible possibilities as well. As an educator I’m committed to lifelong learning and constantly renewing my skills and since most of my students are consistently using their devices to stay connected and learn from both the global and local community surrounding them, I do feel compelled to explore digital content and at the very least understand the significant impact both positive and negative that technology is having on their lives. I teach at a large high school that offers diverse programming from Grades 9 through 12. When I began my career, cell phones were not yet accessible to most and email was still the most common and fastest way to connect with someone. I am also a Mom to two boys in Elementary school. I can already see the significant roll that technology is beginning to play in their lives. Thinking of their friends who are beginning to access social media sites and games that keep them distracted until I require them to hand in technology, I want to help guide them as they age into this digital revolution. So join me in my exploration of Digital Citizenship from the darkness into the light!
